Data Governance (DG) is defined as “the exercise of authority and control (planning, monitoring, and enforcement) over the management of data assets to ensure that those assets are managed properly”.

DG encompasses all the activities that are needed to ensure that DM is done properly. Properly for me means that data is managed:

  • effectively
  • efficiently
  • ethically
  • legally
  • securely
  • according to the organization’s policies and standards

Data Governance has the goal to understand, structure, document and manage the own data assets within an organization. This includes metadata documentation as well as visualization of data flows via. Data lineage and the formal process of ownership allocation.

Data governance is a culture, not just about the technology, process or people.

Data governance is an organizational culture that aims to create a consistent and repeatable approach to managing data across departments and projects. It's more than just establishing some rules around how data is created and managed; it's also about encouraging people to use those rules consistently as they work with data every day.

To make this happen, data governance needs to be considered as part of any project involving analysis of large amounts of information before it even begins. By making sure that everyone involved understands how their role fits into the bigger picture of managing all our company’s information assets (not just the ones they're working on), we can avoid having too many different ways of doing things within one organization—and save ourselves from wasting time figuring out what works best later on down the road when we realize something doesn't match up anymore because someone changed something without thinking about whether or not it might affect other teams' processes further down line
